Kintyre Peninsula highlights - day 1. When the day of our eagerly anticipated Kintyre trip arrived, we set off from Edinburgh early. By mid-morning we'd reached Tayinloan on the Kintyre Peninsula and were in need of caffeine. Filling our faces with cake, and cappuccino in Big Jessie's Tearoom, we laughed quietly when we heard a familiar tune.

The Kintyre 66 can be accessed via road, air or the water, which is a pretty special way to arrive. The main way to travel to and from Kintyre is by car or by bus via the A82 and then the A83 - with a short ferry trip to Gigha from Tayinloan on the Kintyre peninsula. From the north of Scotland, come via Oban on the A816 to pick up the A83.

Kintyre. Campbeltown. Kintyre is a peninsula in south-west Scotland that extends for some 40 miles from the Mull of Kintyre in the south to Tarbert in the north. The peninsula is nowhere much more than ten miles wide. At Tarbert the isthmus preventing the rest of Kintyre becoming an island is just a mile across, where West Loch Kintyre bites.

Scotland is known for its whisky, and if there's a particular 'whisky hub' to be visited above all others, then it might well be Campbeltown, nestled in the southeastern corner of the Kintyre peninsula.
